LIKE THEIR GRANDFATHER AND FATHER BEFORE THEM, JOHN AND JEFF KNEW THEY WANTED TO BE IN REAL ESTATE

Borrower Stories | Baltimore, MD | March 2024

It was in their blood. John and Jeff’s grandfather was a builder in the 1950s, a true craftsman putting homes together by hand. Their dad joined him in the 1980s and followed the same model.

John and Jeff knew they wanted to be in the business but had a more expansive vision. They joined their father and grandfather when they were in their early twenties but began building a bigger crew and bigger buildings. They expanded adding commercial landscaping and property management divisions. Within two years, they were a $10 million business and today have topped $100 million.

So, what’s the key to their success? John will answer “Relationships. People love us! Our Grandpa coached us—we are old school in how we operate.” And they are very community minded. Every year, the company commits 600 hours to community service, and they have even found ways to direct their core development activity to public purposes. They’ve worked alongside non-profits to design buildings where residents with special needs can live independently, but have the security of a caregiver in close proximity.

John and Jeff met our development associate, Matt Luterman, through mutual contacts. Six months later, we financed acquisition and site development for several dozen lots in York for outsale to a major national developer. When asked about working with us, John replied, “Phenomenal! Matt has been tenacious. Our staff can’t believe how smooth and easy it is to work with Spring Garden Lending. We will absolutely work with them again!”

Matt added, “It’s been enlightening working with a company who has achieved such success over the past decade, while remembering its roots by giving back to the community. Our values are aligned—building relationships and improving community.”
